WHYYYYYYY do so many people have to freak out all the time when they ask me what kind of music I like, and I reply with "alternative music"?! They get all defensive of their fave music from the early 90's and rant and rave at me about how alternative music of lately isn't really alternative anymore, it's just pop or rock, bla bla bla, the only REAL alternative music was the music from around 1993, bla bla bla, etc.

Okay, first of all, do NOT say alternative music is the same as pop. You have to be either completely deaf or otherwise a complete and utter MORON to think that alternative music sounds ANYTHING like pop. Excuse me, but if you think that Silverchair and Foo Fighters should be categorized in the same sections of the music world as Britney Spears and 'N Sync, you have got some serious, SERIOUS problems.

Now as for the rock reference...well, that one I can actually understand, but still. They are NOT the same thing!!!
Now maybe alternative music isn't the same as it was 6 or 7 years ago, but that doesn't mean that it's become undone as a genre of music and now must be classified as pop or whatever. That's just stupid. When people ask what kind of music I like, OBVIOUSLY I'm going to say alternative, no matter how warped people think it's become since the early 90's. It's STILL different from pop or rock and it actually answers your question...unless you're completely idiotic, you KNOW that poeple who state alternative music as their fave kinds of tunes are talking about stuff like Our Lady Peace (well, maybe not you Americans, but they're pretty much my fave band, so...=P), Goo Goo Dolls, etc...NOT Backstreet Boys and that kind of stuff.

So, if any of my friends are reading this and plan on bringing up that whole "alternative music is not an alternative to anything anymore" (if you think that, you REALLY don't listen to a lot of music, then, and don't have a clue to what you're talking about...), then you better think twice about it, 'cause, I will NOT be a happy girl. =P
